Evelyn's 1st Birthday

Here are a few pictures from Evelyn's first birthday.  We had a rather laid back day, as she is only one and she won't remember. =)  My mom came over for the afternoon, dinner, and cake (dad was out of town), and we ended the evening with a game of Settler's, once Evelyn and Sebastian were in bed.  I thought that it was a nice birthday.

I was attempting to take a nice birthday picture, she had other ideas.

She did a lot of slouching.

The decorated birthday cake.  My mom did the roses on top, I did the rest.

Sebastian was VERY excited all day long.

Opening birthday presents, she couldn't quite figure it all out.

Opening her doll from Gaffer and Grammy.

She immediately gave it a kiss, and she still kisses it every time she sees it.

Playing with the toy from Daddy and Mommy.  (It use to be Sebastian's, but I hadn't pulled it down from the attic yet.)

Singing "Happy Birthday."

She didn't really eat that much, she just enjoyed making a mess.

Just a Day

4th of July

I always find that, on holidays, I am so busy relaxing and having fun that I forget to take many pictures.  Nevertheless, here are the few that I took on the 4th of July.  We spent the day with my parents and then headed to uptown where we sat in a park and watched an amazing fireworks display.  Sebastian loved it and Evelyn wasn't fazed by the noise in the slightest.

So Proud

While Sebastian was in his room, playing with Legos, I asked him if he wanted to listen to a book while he played.  He said yes so I suggested The Hobbit. He replied, "Yes, The Hobbit, part one, by J.R.R. Tolkien." He even pronounced Tolkien, "Tolkeen" not "Tolkin", I'm so proud.

Church: It's Not About Us

I was recently reading a blog post about someone’s fifteen reasons why they attend church, despite the fact that: they don’t really like it, the sermons are boring, and their church has hardly any community.  I was astounded while reading this list—and some of the comments that followed—as not once did anyone say, “I attend church to worship and honor God.” But then, considering the multitude of denominations that have sprung up throughout the years, this really is not too surprising. Many have forgotten what the purpose of church is, and so we question it because something just doesn’t feel right but we don’t know what is wrong.  Some churches have become so casual and ordinary that all sense of tradition has been lost. There are those that enjoy this, they like to be “entertained,” they like for church to be “fun”. They see God as their “buddy buddy” and “best friend” and their “daddy” and not as their Awesome God who should be revered and glorified and, to some extent, feared.  They look upon church with the thought, “What can and do I get out of it?”  Because of these views people no longer see Church as “God’s House,” a place that we go with the primary intention of honoring and worshiping God.  Granted, we can and should honor and worship God in our own homes, but that should not take the place of attending church. There is something special and significant to worshiping God at church. We are taking time out of our lives to focus ENTIRELY upon God and to worship Him.
This feeling of “I don’t really want to attend church on Sunday but I go because I feel like I should” is WRONG and we need to recognize it as such, not accept it as inevitable.  Wouldn’t Satan just LOVE it if we all stopped attending church in order to do “something else spiritual”. The point is that we need to recognize this feeling for what it is, the Devil wanting to turn us from God.   If there isn’t something special and significant in attending church at a church then why was it instituted in the first place? We might as well all stay home and just watch it on television. We should be EXCITED to go to Church to worship God, not feel like it is a chore. There should be joy and excitement at the thought that we have the freedom and privilege to attend church each Sunday (or more) and worship God. This idea that our faith is “all about us” is a terrible one and needs to be recognized as such and fought against.  God does NOT need us.  God is not grateful to us when we attend church, “Oh they have come to worship me, Yay! I needed that validation.” We honor God because We need Him.  We get up in the morning, dress up—By the way, why do people think that it is acceptable to basically roll out of bed, throw on any old thing, and go to Church?  We wouldn’t do that if we were going to meet the President or the Queen of England.  We would take great care over how we look like we do for any special occasion. So, why do we think that it is okay to not do that for God.  We need to give God our First Fruits, not our leftovers.  We have turned into a world of Cains and we think that the Abels are old-fashioned fuddy-duddies whom we resent. It comes back to the fact that we have lost all reverence for God and turned our relationship with Him into something casual, but I digress—We get up in the morning, dress up and go to God’s house in order to focus upon Him away from the distractions of ordinary life. It is a special thing, done in a special place, and in a special way. Yes, the sermon may be boring and the music may be off key but God is present and that is why we go, to be in His presence and to Honor Him as we should, and that is something I should always be excited to do.

Happy Birthday Evelyn

Almost exactly one year ago to this hour, Evelyn Marie was born.  I can hardly remember what it was like without her around.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVELYN!

Garden Update

I just realized today that while I had posted pictures of the garden when we first planted it, I had not ever taken any pictures to show what it looks like these days.

View of the garden from the patio.

Black eyed peas.  The plan is store dried black eyed peas for future use. This involves leaving them on the vine until the pods dry out completely, and then removing the dried peas from the pods.

One view of our monster tomatoes.

Two of our six green peppers.  Behind the green peppers are our jalapeno bushes.

Eggplant, not doing so great.  But, we have eaten one eggplant and another one is growing.

Green beans. Something is eating these, besides us, and we are working on figuring out what.

Leaf Lettuce.  Best recipe ever: Heavy cream + sugar + white vinegar, mixed together and tossed with lettuce greens. DELICIOUS!

Zucchini.  It has been a struggle to keep these alive thanks to Squash Vine Borers and other pests.

Here we have my tomato arch.  I strung a string above the tomatoes so that the longer branches have something to rest on other than the ground.  Some of these tomato bush branches are eight feet long, and still going strong.

Butternut Squash, it makes great soup, among other things. These three are sitting in their slings so that they don't break the vines.

This first trellis is our cucumbers, looking a bit wilty because I took this picture at two in the afternoon.

Three more tomato bushes.  We have TONS of tomatoes, which is good as the children LOVE them, especially Evelyn.

One of my lovely cucumbers.  These will probably be made into pickles.
That is the current status of our garden.  It is a constant battle against pests and tomatoes that want to take over the world, but we are deeming this year learning experience.  Hopefully, in the future, we will know more what to do and how to get more food and fewer vines.

The First Six Months

I decided to find photographs of Sebastian and Evelyn at the same ages, to show how much they look alike.
